Abstract

Antimicrobial resistance is currently seen as a significant threat to human health in the 21st century. Polymixin and Colistin were disregarded due to their toxic effects for several years. Nowadays, they are regarded as the final recourse for treating severe infections caused by multi-drug resistant gram-negative bacteria (MDR-GNB).
Objectives: The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of colistin resistance among gram negative micro organisms isolated from patients admitted at Fayoum University Hospital.
Methods: This study, which was observational and cross-sectional in nature, took place for a duration of 6 months in 2023. 115 isolates were collected in total. Complete identification was achieved through traditional microbiological techniques.
Results: Among 115 gram-negative bacilli isolates, 14 were resistant to colistin, and 101 were susceptible to colistin.

Conclusion: There is a growing interest in Polymyxins due to the global spread of multi-drug resistant gram negative bacteria and the lack of new antibiotics on the market.
